Charity in Action: PERKIM Provides Aid to Ailing Muallaf Couple
By: Muhammad Farhan Tee Abdullah
BALAKONG, 23 May 2025 – The National PERKIM (Islamic Welfare Organisation of Malaysia) recently received a phone call from Mr. Mohd Rosli Gunasekaran Abdullah, 67, a Muslim convert who embraced Islam on 29 January 1982 at PERKIM Headquarters. He currently resides with his wife, Zawyah Yusof, 68, in a flat located in Balakong, Seri Kembangan, Selangor.
The couple was married on 23 April 1982 and were blessed with two children. Unfortunately, one of their children passed away 14 years ago. Their surviving child, now 33 years old, is employed in a regular job.
Mr. Rosli is a recipient of monthly financial assistance from the Selangor Zakat Board (LZS), which also includes a housing rental subsidy. Hearing-impaired, he now serves as the primary caregiver for his wife, who is suffering from chronic kidney disease. One of her kidneys is no longer functional, and she is now solely dependent on her remaining kidney.
Zawyah requires dialysis treatment three times a week at a private medical centre, with each session costing RM180. The couple has to hire transportation to get to the centre, incurring additional expenses.
In addition, Zawyah requires adult diapers, which cost nearly RM300 monthly, excluding the cost of medications for her condition. Although they receive aid from LZS, the support is insufficient due to their mounting expenses.
A major source of their anxiety is the accumulated dialysis debt amounting to RM11,636.00, covering treatments from January 2024 to April 2025. There are growing concerns that the treatment centre may cease providing services if the outstanding balance is not settled.
In response, PERKIM National visited the couple and extended a donation to Mr. Rosli to help ease their financial burden.
May Mr. Rosli and his wife be granted strength and perseverance in facing these life challenges.
Donations can be made directly to Mr. Mohd Rosli Gunasekaran via Maybank account: 1081 5917 9366. He can also be contacted at 016-3274118.
