PERKIM Women Background
PERKIM WOMEN
1. Background
PERKIM Women has been running for a long time as a Division but has never been registered as such. It is understood that efforts have been made to register the Women’s Division of PERKIM but the Registrar of Societies is of the opinion that the Women’s Division does not need to be registered as it is part of PERKIM. In the meantime, several PERKIM Women’s Branches have been established and registered. These branches are considered to be Branches to the Women’s Division of PERKIM and not Branches to the State Division. PERKIM Women at all levels can be established with the purposes as under Article 5 of the PERKIM Constitution. So the National Council has the authority to make regulations from time to time in accordance with the PERKIM Constitution. The regulation is called PERKIM WOMAN MOVEMENT or simply PERKIM WOMAN. This movement can be established at the National, Divisional and Branch levels.
2. PERKIM Women’s Organization
In 1974, Y.A.Bhg. Datuk Amar Puan Sri Dr. Hajjah Laila Taib as a lifelong member of PERKIM has taken the initiative to establish a women’s section on the advice of Y.T.M Tunku Abdul Rahman Al Haj considering how many women among the new sisters have problems with their families of origin who are not Muslims after they embrace Islamic religion. A small number of them are interested in knowing and learning Islam on their own accord after seeing a good example in the family of their Muslim friends. There are also non-Muslim women who have been deceived by the sweet promises of evil men who have taken them as wives and not given Islamic religious guidance. After several years of marriage, they were abandoned by an irresponsible husband along with several children. So this is the role of Wanita PERKIM to provide humanitarian and spiritual assistance.
3. Role of PERKIM Women
Due to the efforts of Y.A.Bhg Datuk Amar Puan Sri Dr. Hajjah Laila Taib, now Wanita PERKIM has as many as 66 branches under the supervision of 11 divisions with a membership of 20,257 members. With that, Wanita PERKIM has a big role in pouring all their energy to realize the Government’s desire to increase the dignity of women as the heart of Malaysia’s development towards a level of excellence. God’s plan to choose Wanita PERKIM to carry out this great trust certainly contains its own wisdom.
4. Activities that have been worked on by PERKIM Women
In 1980 after Wanita PERKIM was officially established under the supervision of Y.A.Bhg. Datuk Amar Puan Sri Dr. Hajjah Laila Taib various activities have been carried out making PERKIM Women synonymous with Welfare and Islamic Religion throughout Southeast Asia and the Middle East. Apart from being the Head of Women Y.A.Bhg. Datuk Amar is also the chairman of the women’s movement of the Regional Islamic Da’wah Council for Southeast Asia and the Pacific (RISEAP).
