KAKI BUKIT, SEPTEMBER 25, 2026 – The commitment to caring for those in need was once again demonstrated through a welfare visit by the Muslim Welfare Organisation Malaysia (PERKIM) to Rumah Sejahtera Kaki Bukit, a care centre near the Malaysia-Thailand border, on Friday morning.

The programme, jointly organised by PERKIM Kebangsaan and the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP), in collaboration with PERKIM Perlis, was more than an initiative to distribute essential supplies.

It also served as a platform to strengthen bonds of fellowship, foster humanitarian values and provide a closer understanding of the lives and needs of the residents at the care centre.

The visit underscored PERKIM’s continued commitment to broadening its welfare outreach and reaching out to communities regardless of background, in line with its efforts to nurture a culture of mutual assistance, compassion and social responsibility.

Patron of Rumah Sejahtera Kaki Bukit, Datin Ong Kim Leng, and its secretary, Cikgu Chung Heong Ming, together with 25 elderly residents, welcomed the PERKIM delegation upon its arrival at the centre.

Also present were PERKIM Perlis chairman Dato’ Haji Khairi Hasan; PERKIM Perlis treasurer Tuan Haji Mohd Arshad Daud; and PERKIM Perlis executive Abdulmubeen Yanya.

In her welcoming remarks, Rumah Sejahtera Kaki Bukit Committee Member, Tan Leok Pui expressed her appreciation to PERKIM Kebangsaan, MAIWP and PERKIM Perlis for taking the time to visit the centre and extend their care and attention to its residents.

She said the visit not only reflected concern for the residents’ needs but also provided a closer insight into their daily lives, welfare and circumstances.

She added that the cooperation and ties established through the visit would hopefully continue to be strengthened and sustained in the years ahead.

Meanwhile, programme coordinator Muhammad Jais Mariappan Abdullah said the visit was part of PERKIM’s efforts to fulfil its responsibility of delivering contributions to welfare homes through the support provided by MAIWP.

He said while the contributions might not be substantial in material terms, their significance went far beyond their monetary value as they represented remembrance, compassion and concern for fellow human beings.

“For us, what matters most is not the size of the contribution, but the opportunity to reach out to those in need, see their circumstances first-hand and understand the lives they lead.

“The true value of this visit lies in humanity. We help one another, and hopefully, when our time comes, Allah SWT will extend His help and ease our own affairs,” he said.

Jais Mariappan also expressed his appreciation to MAIWP for providing the funding that enabled welfare contributions to be channelled to selected care homes.

He said PERKIM would continue its efforts to identify and highlight welfare centres in need of greater public attention, enabling more parties to come forward and extend assistance.

According to him, greater public awareness of care centres such as Rumah Sejahtera Kaki Bukit could open the door to wider forms of support from individuals, non-governmental organisations and the private sector.

“When the community becomes aware of the existence of centres like this and sees the efforts being made, hopefully more people will come forward to help.

“We want this spirit of charity and compassion to grow and inspire others to play their part,” he said.

Jais Mariappan also commended the management of Rumah Sejahtera Kaki Bukit, describing the centre as being well maintained and attentive to the welfare of its residents.

The programme also featured the presentation of food kits contributed by MAIWP to all 25 residents at the care centre, jointly presented by Dato’ Khairi and Datin Ong Kim.

The food kits contained essential items including oat cereals, Omega milk, biscuits and towels.

The contributions were presented as a gesture of care and compassion towards the residents, while also symbolising continued support for the management’s efforts to provide welfare services and care for them.

A PERKIM commemorative plaque was also presented by Dato’ Khairi to Datin Ong Kim as a token of appreciation for welcoming the delegation, while Datin Ong Kim presented a reciprocal appreciation plaque to Dato’ Ong Kim.

Also accompanying the PERKIM delegation were secretariat members Hashimah Hashim, Azura Abdul Rahman, Abdulmubeen Yanya, Fatin Akmal Aksah and Naszri Osman.

The delegation was subsequently taken on a tour of the Rumah Sejahtera Care Centre Gallery, which showcases portraits and artworks by the elderly residents, before visiting the hostel to spend time with and engage in fellowship with the residents.

The programme reflected PERKIM Kebangsaan’s continued efforts, together with its strategic partners, to strengthen the welfare agenda through direct outreach, personal engagement and assistance to those in need.

More than merely delivering contributions, the visit served as a bridge connecting the wider community with those who require care and attention, while nurturing a culture of compassion, empathy and social responsibility.

Ultimately, the true value of a visit lies not merely in what is given, but in the willingness to be present, to listen, to understand and to share in the experiences of those being reached out to.
