Background
The Islamic Welfare Organization of Malaysia (PERKIM) was founded by the late YTM Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj and registered on 19 August 1960. After its establishment, the Tunku was appointed as an advisor until 1971 and was elected as President until 1989.
PERKIM, at the state level is known as PERKIM Bahagian. There are 13 states or divisions throughout the country except Sabah. PERKIM Bahagian management is led by the PERKIM Bahagian Chairman who is appointed in the PERKIM Bahagian General Meeting. The National PERKIM Secretariat channels allocations for staff studies and also for some specific activities at the PERKIM Bahagian level.
PERKIM also has a women’s section known as Wanita PERKIM Kebangsaan with members throughout Malaysia.
At the state level, there are branch entities in each district. These branches are managed by the Branch Chairman who is also elected in the PERKIM Branch General Meeting. Branches are responsible for reporting all activities to the PERKIM Bahagian or state to ensure that this is in line with the National PERKIM policy.
PERKIM’s insignia & symbol is a diagram of a dark green mosque dome and minaret with a five-pointed star above the dome and minaret. All of them are located within a crescent moon above which the words “Pertubuhan Kebajikan Malaysia Islam” and “PERKIM” are written below in Jawi.
