PERKIM Reaches Out to Tourists, Shares Message of Islam at Lebuh Acheh

PENANG, SEPTEMBER 5, 2026– The presence of international tourists in George Town has provided PERKIM with an avenue to broaden its field-based dakwah efforts through direct engagement with non-Muslims at Lebuh Acheh here today.

The programme, organised by PERKIM National in collaboration with the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) and PERKIM Penang Branch, focused on engaging non-Muslims through face-to-face interactions conducted in a relaxed, courteous and respectful manner.

Lebuh Acheh was selected as one of the programme’s locations as it forms part of George Town’s heritage area and is frequently visited by both local and international tourists.

The field-based approach enabled preachers and volunteers to engage directly with mad‘u, while introducing the message of Islam through communication methods appropriate to the backgrounds and circumstances of the individuals they encountered.

The programme was attended by PERKIM National Dakwah Executive Muhammad Farhan Tee Abdullah; PERKIM National Dakwah Executive 3 Nur Syahirah Musa; Deputy Finance Executive Mohd Azrol Mohd Azmi; PERKIM Penang Branch Executive Siti Nasyrah Rosli; PERKIM Penang Branch staff member Nur Syahirah Ismail; as well as volunteers.

Prior to the field session, Farhan Tee briefed the volunteers on appropriate ways of approaching mad‘u, with emphasis on communication, etiquette and suitable approaches when delivering dakwah to non-Muslims.

The briefing was aimed at ensuring that every interaction was conducted with courtesy and wisdom, while instilling an understanding among volunteers of the importance of respecting the cultural, linguistic and religious backgrounds of those they engaged with.

“Field dakwah requires a wise approach and proper etiquette. We are not merely conveying information about Islam, but must also ensure that communication with mad‘u takes place in a positive, relaxed and mutually respectful environment,” he said.

As part of the outreach session, volunteers distributed Goodie Bags to mad‘u containing items such as umbrellas, travel sets, spoons and forks, batik bags and chocolate cakes.

The Goodie Bags also contained informational leaflets carrying messages about Islam, which recipients could take home to learn more about the basic teachings of the religion.

Programme coordinator Syahirah Musa said the field-based approach allowed PERKIM to engage with non-Muslims more openly, particularly in an informal setting.

“The purpose of this programme is to reach out to and engage with non-Muslims through a friendly and respectful dakwah approach. We want to create a positive space for interaction so that the message of Islam can be conveyed in a way that is easy to understand and well received,” she said.

She said direct interaction with mad‘u from diverse backgrounds also gave volunteers valuable experience in adapting their communication methods according to the circumstances and cultural backgrounds of the individuals they encountered.

The tourists engaged during the programme included visitors from Spain, Taiwan, Singapore, China, the United States, Brazil, India, Vietnam and Thailand.

The participation of tourists from different countries added a distinctive dimension to PERKIM’s field-based dakwah efforts, allowing the message of Islam to be introduced to individuals from diverse cultural and national backgrounds.
