by: SRZ
BANGI, 10 MAY 2025 – YABhg Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad stated that this meeting marks the end of his tenure as the President of the Muslim Welfare Organisation Malaysia (PERKIM).
He made the statement during his closing speech at the 64th National Annual General Meeting of PERKIM, held at the Datuk Mohd Shahir Hall, Institute of Islamic Training Malaysia (ILIM) here on Saturday afternoon.
Prior to that, Tun Dr Mahathir listened to closing remarks from PERKIM delegates representing all states, PERKIM Women’s Wing, and the PERKIM Youth Council.
In his final address, he expressed gratitude for the full attendance of delegates, observers, and PERKIM affiliate bodies, and thanked them for the recognition and appreciation shown.
Although he felt that his contributions had yet to fulfil his personal aspirations, he affirmed his commitment to continue supporting PERKIM in any way possible after the leadership transition.
Tun also commended the active role of women in PERKIM and the Muslim community, noting their growing prominence in education and various areas of development, compared to the past.
In a tone that was both critical and sincere, he urged Muslim men to be more proactive—not merely involved in politics or leisure—but to focus on religion and the progress of the ummah.
He expressed concern over the image of Islam frequently being associated with violence, despite many of the actual perpetrators not being Muslims.
He emphasised the importance of unity among Muslims and urged them to return to the true teachings of the Quran, rather than being influenced by the agendas of certain leaders or misguided schools of thought.
Tun Dr Mahathir also proposed that PERKIM members contribute RM1 monthly through automatic bank deduction as a means to strengthen the organisation’s financial sustainability.
He concluded his speech by expressing appreciation for the cooperation he received throughout nearly 20 years at the helm of PERKIM, and hoped that the organisation would continue to thrive as a platform for dakwah and the welfare of the Muslim ummah.
At the end of his address, delegates stood and applauded in a show of respect and gratitude to Tun Dr Mahathir.
