PERKIM Strongly Oppose the Genocide in Palestine; Israel Must Stop This War Immediately – Tun Dr Mahathir
BANGI, 29 JUNE 2024 – “The Muslim Welfare Organisation (PERKIM) strongly opposes the Genocide of Palestinians and Israel must stop the attacks immediately. “said YABhg Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, The President of PERKIM.
He expressed the above after his concluding speech at PERKIM’s sixty-third Annual General Meeting at Tenera Hotel, Bangi recently.
Present at this meeting were PERKIM Delegates and observers from all the states in Malaysia. Also present were Council Members of PERKIM Kebangsaan.
In Tun Dr Mahathir’s keynote address, he compared the safe environment of that meeting to what is going on in Palestine. He said, “Countless Muslims are being killed everyday and there is nothing the world can do to prevent it. In the old days, Islam spread from China to Spain and Islam was respected. Today, Islam is berated, humiliated, degraded and Muslims are tortured and murdered. I believe this is because we are not practising Islam as we should, according to the principles laid down in the Quran. We are told to seek knowledge in ”Iqra” – not only religious knowledge but also knowledge for the betterment and protection of the community.”
“Allah has bestowed riches upon Muslims – oil is discovered in many Muslim countries. Imagine the amount of money oil produces. All those riches are wasted on gilded palaces, personal air-planes, etc costing billions of dollars. This wealth should be distributed among the poor, and the majority of the poor are Muslims
As Muslims, we regard other Muslims as our brothers and sisters and we should not leave them to suffer in poverty, which sometimes create situations beyond their tolerance. There are cases where they choose to commit suicide rather than endure prolonged hunger and hardship, not only for themselves but for their children and loved ones. By right, no one should be destitute as riches from oil, fairly distributed according to Islam can feed every Muslim.
I don’t have much time left but I wish to remind PERKIM of our responsibilities towards our religion and the Muslims. We should portray ourselves as good Muslims by seeking knowledge and distribute wealth so that others may adopt the same values and the Muslim community can rise above poverty.
If we adopt the ways of Islam as dictated in the Holy Quran, we can become strong but as it is, we are weak and are unable to help the oppressed. I hope PERKIM will endeavour to not only concentrate on piety for afterlife but mind our responsibility in this life for this world belongs to us Muslims.”
In his welcoming speech, the Hon Secretary General of PERKIM, Yg Bhg Tan Sri Dr Yusof Noor congratulated and thanked all delegates and observers from every state in Malaysia for being able to assemble at that Hotel in Bangi.
The original plan was to hold this year’s Annual General Meeting at PERKIM Headquarters. However, some renovation would be necessary to accommodate the 220 persons in the building.
He announced the total number of delegates present and eligible to take part in the meeting was 167. He said that as this meeting was in the month of Zulhijjah, a month when Muslims go to Mecca to perform the Hajj, he hoped Allah would bestow some of the blessings on all of us here.
