KUALA LUMPUR, SEPTEMBER 10, 2025 – The Muslim Welfare Organisation Malaysia (PERKIM) National Council was deeply saddened by the passing of one of its Islamic Studies Class students (KPIPK), the late Muhammad Jimmi Ooi, who breathed his last at his residence in Chow Kit on September 9.

According to PERKIM’s Officer of the Dakwah and Human Development Unit, Ustaz Muhammad Farhan Tee Abdullah, the deceased was a new convert to Islam who embraced the faith at the PERKIM National Headquarters in 2022. He was known as a diligent, quiet and respectful student towards both his teachers and peers.

Before enrolling in KPIPK, he had studied at Kompleks Darul Hidayah, Sentul, under the supervision of the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (JAWI).

Friends revealed that Jimmi had been suffering from health problems for about three weeks prior to his death.

On September 8, he sought treatment at a nearby clinic with the assistance of a friend. However, the next day, he could not be reached on his mobile phone. Concerned, another friend went to his rented home to deliver food and was devastated to find him lifeless.

The matter was immediately reported to PERKIM National Council before Ustaz Farhan Tee contacted the Chow Kit Police Station and ambulance services for official verification.

Once confirmed, the body was transferred to the Forensic Unit of Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) for further procedures.

PERKIM staff members, Umi Musfirah Abdul Ghani and Jamilatun Noor Hashim @ Hamid, were also present at the police station to assist in providing information about his next of kin.

Following verification, his family in Penang was notified of his sudden passing. Shocked by the news, they requested PERKIM to manage the funeral arrangements.

Farhan, who also served as one of Jimmi’s instructors at KPIPK, described the deceased as a highly disciplined student who consistently showed commitment to his studies.

“He never caused any trouble. He was diligent, always present in class, and respectful towards teachers and friends. His loss is deeply felt by the entire PERKIM National community,” he said when met.

Meanwhile, his housemate, Muhammad Yusof, said the last time he saw Jimmi alive was the night before the incident.

The body was transferred to HKL after the Isyak prayer for forensic processing.

At 2.40pm, with the cooperation of JAWI led by Mosque Management Division Islamic Affairs Assistant Officer, Ustaz Mohammad Izehar Md Amin, the deceased’s niece, Ooi Huey Ling, arrived at HKL’s Forensic Unit to identify and claim the body.

The remains were then taken to Raudhatul Sakinah Cemetery, Taman Selasih, where the ritual washing, shrouding and funeral prayers were performed.

A sombre atmosphere prevailed during the burial, as light rain accompanied the final journey of the deceased.

Classmates, along with members of PERKIM National and PERKIM Federal Territory Branch, attended to pay their last respects with prayers, recitations of Surah Al-Fatihah, and other verses from the Holy Quran.

Ustaz Izehar also led the talqin, supplications and offered words of advice to the congregation, reminding them to take lessons from the passing of a fellow Muslim brother.

After the burial, relatives and friends laid flowers at the grave as a gesture of love and final tribute.

On behalf of PERKIM National, Farhan extended his deepest condolences to the family.

“We are truly saddened by the loss of a new brother in Islam who had been learning with us since embracing the faith.

“May his family remain steadfast in facing this trial, and may his soul be showered with mercy and placed among the faithful and righteous servants of Allah,” he said.

The passing of Muhammad Jimmi Ooi not only left a void for his family and friends but also resonated deeply within the convert community, where he had found guidance, knowledge and strength in his Islamic faith.

Also present at the funeral was Federal Territory PERKIM Dakwah Officer, Ustaz Mohd Jogi Panjaitan Maruli.
