KUALA LUMPUR, March 7, 2026 – More than 230 Muslim converts from diverse ethnic backgrounds took part in a Grand Al-Quran Tadarus programme held in conjunction with the Nuzul Al-Quran celebration for 1447H and the 66th anniversary of Muslim Welfare Organisation Malaysia (PERKIM) at the Surau Jumaat PERKIM, PERKIM Building, Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, here on Saturday morning.
The programme, jointly organised by PERKIM National and Surau Jumaat PERKIM, brought together converts from various communities including Chinese, Indian, Iban, Kadazan, Murut and Bidayuh, as well as participants from the Philippines, Indonesia, Cambodia and Myanmar.
Participants were divided into 15 groups, with each group reciting two juzuk of the Al-Quran under the guidance of appointed facilitators (munabbih). Three special groups were also formed, two for adults and one for children who are still new to learning the Quran, focusing on guided recitation of selected verses.
The event was fully emceed by PERKIM National Dakwah Executive, Ustaz Muhammad Farhan Tee Abdullah.
The programme was further graced by the presence of PERKIM National Women’s Chief, YTM Tunku Puan Sri Dato’ Hajah Noor Hayati Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, accompanied by PERKIM Vice-President YBhg Dr Mohd Ridhuan Tee Abdullah and PERKIM National Council Member YBhg Dr Nur’azah Dato’ Abdul Manaf.
Following the tadarus session, PERKIM National Dakwah Executive Ustaz Muhammad Jais Mariappan Abdullah led the khatam (completion) recitation of the Al-Quran beginning from Surah Ad-Dhuha until Surah An-Nas before delivering the doa khatam al-Quran.
He later led the recitation of Surah Yasin and tahlil, which were collectively dedicated to PERKIM’s founder, the late Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj.
In his welcoming speech on behalf of PERKIM Honorary Secretary-General YBhg Dato’ Dr Haji Mohamad Marzuki Mohamad Omar, PERKIM National Administration Director, YBhg Dr Suariza @ Hidayah Muhammad said the commemoration of Nuzul Al-Quran marks a significant moment in Islamic history, recalling the revelation of the first divine message to Prophet Muhammad SAW as guidance for all mankind.
She said the Quran is not merely a holy book to be recited but should also be understood, internalised and practised in daily life to cultivate a morally upright and harmonious society.
She also explained that PERKIM Day, celebrated annually on Feb 8, was established to commemorate the birthday of its founder, the late Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, although the organisation was officially founded on Aug 19, 1960, a date formally recognised by PERKIM’s National Council.

Meanwhile, PERKIM Vice-President Dr Mohd Ridhuan Tee Abdullah, in his officiating speech, expressed gratitude to Allah SWT for the opportunity to gather for the Nuzul Al-Quran celebration and PERKIM’s 66th anniversary.
He also conveyed appreciation to all parties involved in making the programme a success, particularly PERKIM members who continue to remain committed to carrying out dakwah and welfare efforts for Muslim converts.
In his address, Dr Ridhuan Tee reflected on the immense contributions of the late Tunku Abdul Rahman, describing him as a statesman who played an important role in introducing Islam to non-Muslim communities.
He noted that although Tunku was not a religious scholar, he often encouraged non-Muslims to learn about Islam, in line with a hadith of the Prophet Muhammad SAW urging Muslims to convey the message of Islam even if it is only a single verse.
“The leadership demonstrated by the late Tunku shows that a leader who performs good deeds will become a role model for society,” he said.
He also urged PERKIM members and Muslims to confidently invite their non-Muslim friends to learn about Islam through wise approaches, whether through kind words, exemplary conduct or interactions that reflect the beauty of Islamic teachings.
Dr Ridhuan Tee also shared his personal journey as a convert who embraced Islam after leaving his former beliefs, which made him more aware of the importance of safeguarding the purity of faith while strengthening dakwah efforts.
He said PERKIM must continue to play its role as an active organisation in safeguarding the welfare of Muslim converts and championing issues affecting the Muslim community.
At the same time, he emphasised that Islam respects the rights of followers of other religions to practise their faith, provided that all activities are conducted with respect for the boundaries and rights of the local community.
He also reminded that the efforts carried out by PERKIM, such as assisting converts, providing religious knowledge and offering welfare aid, constitute amal jariah, a form of charity whose rewards continue even after one’s passing.
“These efforts not only benefit society but also become a lasting investment in the hereafter, with rewards that continue even for those who have passed away,” he said.
At the end of his speech, he invited all present to continue praying that PERKIM’s da’wah and welfare efforts would always be blessed by Allah SWT and that the late Tunku Abdul Rahman be placed among the righteous.
With the recitation of Bismillahirrahmanirrahim, he officially launched the Nuzul Al-Quran Celebration 1447H and PERKIM’s 66th Anniversary celebration.
The event also featured the presentation of tokens of appreciation by Dr Ridhuan Tee to the munabbih and tadarus participants, while Tunku Noor Hayati presented zakat contributions to participants at the end of the programme.
