A Memorandum of Agreement for Research Was Signed Between UIS and PERKIM
KAJANG, 9 JANUARY 2024 – A collaborative research between University Islam Selangor (UIS) and Muslim Welfare Organisation of Malaysia (PERKIM) will develop a model as a guide to a practical approach for professional reverts to act as missionaries within their own group, said the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Research, UIS Industry & Community Network, said YBhg Prof Madya Dr Mokmin Basri, in his speech on the occasion of the signing of the MOA, which took place at the Senate Room, UIS, Bandar Seri Putra on Tuesday morning.
Dr Mokmin welcomed the leaders from PERKIM and congratulated them on the agreement to participate in this research venture titled “Module Development for Professional Reverts as Missionaries”.
Dr Mokmin also congratulated the Dean of the Faculty of Islamic Culture Studies, Dr Rosni Wazir, who had built a research collaboration network which will leave an impact specifically in da’wah.
This research will be headed by Associate Professor Mariam Abdul Majid, lecturer at the Jabatan Dakwah & Usuluddin, UIS while the PERKIM group be headed by the Director of Education and Human Development, PERKIM National, Dr Suariza @ Hidayah Muhammad.
Dr Mokmin pointed out that the signing of this Research MOA will manifest a collaboration and cooperation in research, academic writing, publication of research findings, seminars, discussions on other fields as agreed upon by both parties.
He hoped, in the future, this MOA will provide further opportunities for collaboration and cooperation on other programmes and activities based on the expertise and skills of UIS and PERKIM.
At the same time, he prays that this collaboration will augment the cooperative spirit of UIS and PERKIM, apart from the active dakwah, welfare and education activities of the under-graduate PERKIM-UIS club members.
Before the signing of the MOA, the Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of UIS, Dato Associate Professor Dr Mohd Farid Ravi Abdullah invited the Hon Secretary General of PERKIM, Tan Sri Dr Mohd Yusof Noor and his staff to UIS.
The latter, in his speech, congratulated UIS for the tremendous work done to form UIS and change from its former title of International Islamic University College, Selangor.
Dato Dr Farid, he said, is a product of PERKIM, who at 18 years of age reverted to Islam, declaring his syahadah in front of Ustaz Kadir Chong. He resumed his studies at IDIP-KB in Kelantan.
Dr Yusof Noor thanked UIS for choosing PERKIM for this research programme and hoped that it will generate something contemporary to benefit all in Malaysia and add value to UIS.
Dr Farid Ravi appealed for donations to rebuild a new hostel at IDIP-KB which will house students from all over Malaysia and beyond. The cost of rebuilding the hostel is estimated at RM 7 million.
IDIP-KB has produced many well-known missionaries among the reverts.
The alms tax collected each year is distributed among the new reverts. In the Quran, it is stated in Surah At-Taubah which means: “The alms are surely only for the poor and the needy, and for those employed to administer alms, and for those whose hearts have been recently reconciled to the faith, and for captives and those burdened with debts, and (to be spent) for the cause of Allah, and for the wayfarers (stranded on the way). Such ordinance is a duty enjoined by Allah. And Allah is all-knowing, all wise”.
Some people regard reverts as poor but many are professionals and rich. Dr Yusuf Noor hoped that the research will reveal; a situation like that of the era of Rasulullah SAW where the early reverts were rich, including the wife of Rasulullah SAW, Sayyiditina Khadijah Khuwalid.
In the Western world, many who reverted to Islam are intellectuals, not the poor. It is hoped that PERKIM’s 60 years of experience will be of some help in building the module.
Dr Yusof Noor and Dato’ Haji Abdul Hanif Harun signed the MOA for PERKIM while Dr Mokmin and Dr Rosni signed for UIS.
There was an exchange of gifts at the closure of the event.
