PERKIM Concludes 2026 Field Dakwah Series, Reaches Out to International Tourists in George Town

PENANG, SEPTEMBER 5, 2026 – PERKIM’s 2026 Field Dakwah Programme concluded today with an outreach session around Lebuh Buckingham here, focusing on engaging and reaching out to non-Muslim tourists from various countries.

The programme, organised by PERKIM National in collaboration with the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) and with the cooperation of PERKIM Penang Branch, served as one of PERKIM’s field-based dakwah initiatives, bringing its team into direct contact with non-Muslims, particularly tourists visiting the historic areas of George Town.

The closing session was conducted in a relaxed setting, with participants taking the opportunity to approach tourists and engage with them in a courteous and respectful manner, while also distributing informational materials about Islam.

Among the tourists engaged during the programme were visitors from Australia, South Korea, Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and Canada.

Encounters with tourists from diverse backgrounds provided the dakwah team with opportunities to introduce Islam through an approachable method, while fostering positive interactions between the local community and international visitors.

The programme was attended by PERKIM National Dakwah Executive Muhammad Farhan Tee Abdullah; PERKIM National Dakwah Executive 3 Nur Syahirah Musa; Deputy Finance Executive Mohd Azrol Mohd Azmi; PERKIM Penang Branch Executive Siti Nasyrah Rosli; PERKIM Penang Branch staff member Nur Syahirah Ismail; as well as volunteers.

During the outreach session, participants also distributed Goodie Bags to tourists as one of the approaches used to build rapport and facilitate the sharing of the message of Islam.

The Goodie Bags contained umbrellas, travel sets, spoons and forks, batik bags and chocolate cakes, together with informational leaflets on Islam to provide the mad‘u with basic information about the religion.

Programme coordinator Nur Syahirah Musa said the conclusion of this year’s field dakwah programme did not signal an end to efforts to engage with the community, but instead formed part of the continuity of PERKIM’s dakwah efforts.

“This programme marks the conclusion of PERKIM’s field dakwah series for this year. What is important is that we were able to go into the field, meet members of the community and engage with non-Muslims in a positive environment. Interactions such as these provide an opportunity for us to convey the message of Islam in a more direct and respectful manner,” she said.

She said the field-based dakwah approach had its own value as preachers and volunteers were able to engage directly with people from diverse backgrounds.

“Every encounter provides a different experience. We are not only conveying the message of Islam, but also learning to understand cultural backgrounds and how to communicate with mad‘u from different countries,” she said.

Throughout the programme, volunteers also played a role in approaching and engaging tourists around the location, while assisting in the distribution of Goodie Bags and Islamic informational materials.

Lebuh Buckingham, located within the George Town area, also provided a suitable setting for the field dakwah activities due to its location within the heritage area, which attracts a steady flow of visitors.

For PERKIM, face-to-face dakwah efforts such as these remain important in bringing the message of Islam closer to the community through positive communication, engagement and good character, without being confined to formal dakwah programmes.

The conclusion of this year’s field dakwah series also provided an opportunity to reflect on the experiences gained throughout the implementation of the activities, particularly in strengthening volunteer participation and enhancing the dakwah team’s ability to engage with mad‘u from diverse backgrounds.

The collaboration between PERKIM National, MAIWP and PERKIM Penang Branch in organising the programme also underscored the importance of strategic cooperation in strengthening dakwah efforts at the grassroots level.

With the conclusion of the programme, PERKIM remains committed to ensuring that its dakwah efforts among non-Muslims continue through approaches that are wise, courteous and respectful of the diversity within society.
