Tun Dr Mahathir Pays Final Respects to Former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi
KUALA LUMPUR, 15 APRIL 2025 – The President of the Muslim Welfare Organisation of Malaysia (PERKIM), Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, paid his final respects to Malaysia’s fifth Prime Minister, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, at the National Mosque today.
His presence reflected his respect for Tun Abdullah’s lifelong service and contributions to the nation.
Tun Abdullah, fondly known as “Pak Lah”, passed away at 7:10 PM on 14 April 2025 at the National Heart Institute (IJN), after being admitted to the intensive care unit due to respiratory complications. He was 85.
Tun Abdullah served as Malaysia’s fifth Prime Minister from 2003 to 2009, succeeding Tun Dr Mahathir
During his tenure, Tun Abdullah was known for advocating moderate Islamic governance, spearheading anti-corruption initiatives, and championing economic and technological advancement.
While his administration introduced key reforms, it also faced challenges, including criticism over fuel subsidy reductions and political pressure that eventually led to his resignation in 2009.
Also present was PERKIM’s Honorary Secretary-General, YBhg Tan Sri Dr Mohd Yusof Noor, who extended heartfelt condolences to Tun Abdullah’s family and loved ones.
Dr Yusof Noor described the passing of Tun Abdullah as a significant loss to the nation, particularly in the realm of moderate and principled Islamic leadership. He praised Tun Abdullah’s legacy in Islamic outreach (dakwah) through his promotion of Islam Hadhari, which underscored moral values in governance.
*He added that Tun Abdullah was a calm, principled, and people-centric leader, who remained steadfast in his support for charitable and religious outreach efforts, including close collaboration with PERKIM.
“I once again express my deepest appreciation for his service and dedication, and I extend my heartfelt condolences to his entire family. May Allah SWT shower His mercy upon his soul and place him among the righteous. Al-Fatihah,” he said.
The final tribute ceremony at the National Mosque was attended by Tun Abdullah’s family members, national leaders, and *members of the public who came to honour the legacy of a deeply respected statesman.


Dr Yusof Noor also visited and paid his last respects to the late Pak Lah.

Dr Yusof Noor had the opportunity to meet with guests who visited the late Pak Lah.

Dr Yusof Noor welcomed the arrival of the President of PERKIM, YABhg Tun Dr Mahathir at the National Mosque compound.

Dr Mahathir and his son, Dato’ Mukhriz, headed to the prayer hall to pay their last respects.

Pak Lah’s son-in-law, Khairi Jamaludin, brought and invited Tun Dr Mahathir to the middle of the prayer room.

Tun Dr Mahathir stood tall while meditating and presented al-Fatihah to the late Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

The Imam of the National Mosque led the prayers over the body of the late Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Tun Yang Dipertua PERKIM departed for home after visiting the deceased.
