PERKIM Strengthens Regional Ties at RISEAP’s 20th General Assembly

PHNOM PEHN, 7 DECEMBER 2024 – Representatives from the Muslim Welfare Organisation Malaysia (PERKIM) made their presence felt at the 20th General Assembly of the Regional Islamic Da’wah Council of Southeast Asia and the Pacific (RISEAP), held at the Sokha Phnom Penh Hotel. The high-profile event brought together leaders and delegates from across the region, creating a dynamic platform for dialogue, collaboration, and knowledge-sharing on issues of da’wah and community development.
PERKIM’s delegation was led by Dato’ Abdul Hanif Haji Harun, Honorary Treasurer of PERKIM, and Mrs. Safiyya Nur Sakeena Sallehuddin, Public Relations Officer. The team arrived in Phnom Penh ready to contribute actively to discussions and activities aimed at fostering unity and progress among member nations.
The assembly kicked off with Zonal Discussion sessions, where participants were divided into North, Central, and South zones to address region-specific challenges and accomplishments. Facilitated by EXCO members, the discussions highlighted pressing issues and shared best practices in engaging communities and promoting da’wah. The afternoon session featured a keynote address by the Rahmatan Lil Alamin Foundation (RLAF), titled “Empowering Communities & Radiating Blessings,” which emphasized collective efforts in building harmony and fostering strong, faith-based communities.
A prestigious Presidential Dinner on the evening of December 6th, presided over by RISEAP President Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, recognized individuals for their exemplary leadership in da’wah. Recipients of the Exemplary Leadership Awards included Br. Abdul Rahman Linzag from Philippines, Br. Sarawoot Sriwannayos from Thailand, Sister Zubeda Raihman from Australia, and HE Vann Math from Cambodia.
The General Assembly’s official opening ceremony was graced by Cambodia’s Prime Minister, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet. In his keynote speech, the Prime Minister highlighted the importance of interfaith harmony and regional solidarity. The ceremony also featured welcoming remarks by RISEAP Honorary Secretary General Dato Marzuki Omar and an address by the RISEAP President.
The assembly itself, chaired by the Deputy President, saw active participation from 23 of RISEAP’s 24 member countries – a historic milestone in the organization’s 42-year history. Key agenda discussions covered pressing challenges, strategic initiatives, and opportunities for collaboration within the region.
The five-day event brought together 16 EXCO members, 37 delegates, and numerous observers from various nations and organizations. The active participation of all attendees, coupled with the tireless efforts of organizers and volunteers, ensured the event’s success.
PERKIM expressed profound gratitude to RISEAP for organizing such an impactful gathering and for the warm hospitality extended to all participants. The assembly not only strengthened bonds among member countries but also underscored the importance of unity in advancing shared goals. PERKIM also extended its heartfelt thanks to the dedicated team of volunteers who worked behind the scenes to ensure the event ran smoothly.
The 20th General Assembly of RISEAP stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of collaboration and unity among its members, paving the way for a stronger, more connected future.
