Maulidur Rasul PERKIM: A Platform to Reflect on the Prophet’s Life, Build Character and Strengthen Dakwah

KUALA LUMPUR, AUGUST 25, 2026 – The 1448H Maulidur Rasul SAW celebration jointly organised by the Muslim Welfare Organisation Malaysia (PERKIM) National and the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) served as a platform to strengthen love and devotion towards Prophet Muhammad SAW, while encouraging Muslims to draw guidance from his sirah, exemplary character and Sunnah in their daily lives.
Held at the PERKIM Friday Prayer Hall, Bangunan PERKIM, Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, here, from 8am, the programme drew more than 200 participants comprising Chinese, Indian, Punjabi, Kadazan, Iban, Bidayuh and Murut Muslims, as well as participants from the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Myanmar and Cambodia.
Also attending were members of the PERKIM University Club, Quran recitation groups and members of the public.
The highlight of the programme was the forum, “The Sirah of Prophet Muhammad SAW: A Guide for Life”, featuring Negeri Sembilan Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JHEAINS) Islamic Affairs Officer Ustaz Tengku Nor Iftah Tengku Jamil and independent speaker Ustazah Tuty Darlis Nasaruddin as panellists.
PERKIM National Dakwah Executive Ustaz Muhammad Farhan Tee Abdullah served as moderator.
The programme began with proceedings conducted by emcee Nur Syahirah Musa, followed by a Qasidah performance by Ahbabussofa Al Muhammadi, a group comprising students from Madrasah Dar Salamah Wat Tihamah.
The group performed several Qasidah pieces, including salutations upon Prophet Muhammad SAW, Tola’al Badru Alaina, Muhammadun, Nabiyuna Rasulullah and other devotional works.
In discussing the life and legacy of Prophet Muhammad SAW, Ustaz Tengku Nor Iftah stressed that the Prophet’s birth brought a new light to the world and marked a defining moment in human history when Allah SWT sent him with the message of Islam.
He said the Prophet grew up as an orphan, yet from a young age was renowned for his noble character and integrity, earning the title al-Amin, while remaining far removed from the practices of the Age of Ignorance, including idol worship.
According to him, love for Prophet Muhammad SAW should not stop at knowing the story of his birth, but must be translated into efforts to understand his sirah, emulate his character and practise his Sunnah in everyday life.
He also emphasised that the Prophet’s exemplary character was among the key strengths behind the spread of Islam, as he did not merely call people towards monotheism but demonstrated the beauty of Islam through his trustworthiness, patience, gentleness and positive relationships with society.
In the context of contemporary dakwah, he reminded participants that the challenge was not confined to conveying the message of Islam to non-Muslims, but also involved guiding Muslims themselves towards a comprehensive understanding and practice of their faith.
Meanwhile, Ustazah Tuty Darlis stressed that Prophet Muhammad SAW was the uswah hasanah, or the finest example, whose character and conduct should be emulated in every aspect of life.
She said love for the Prophet must be demonstrated through positive changes in character and personality, rather than merely through words or annual celebrations.
She also emphasised that the journey of learning and understanding Islam, particularly among new Muslims, was a process requiring patience, time and istiqamah — steadfastness and consistency.
“We should not burden new Muslims with expectations that they master everything within a short period. Learning and practice should be undertaken gradually, according to their ability,” she said.
She identified patience, gentleness, steadfastness and compassion as among the key qualities of Prophet Muhammad SAW that should be incorporated into daily life.
She said new Muslims facing challenges after embracing Islam, including family pressure and changes in their social environment, should look to the Prophet’s patience as an example.
In dealing with family members who have yet to embrace Islam, she said new Muslims should not view the situation as a choice between Islam and their families.
Instead, they should remain steadfast in their faith while maintaining good relations with their families, and continue to show them respect, love and kindness.
According to her, positive changes in character after embracing Islam could also become one of the most effective forms of dakwah, as the beauty of Islam could be witnessed through one’s actions.
During the forum, Ustaz Tengku Nor Iftah also outlined five important foundations to help new Muslims gradually build a meaningful religious life.
The first was to safeguard their Shahadah and aqidah by understanding the meaning of La ilaha illallah, Muhammadur Rasulullah and strengthening their fundamental religious knowledge.
The second was to safeguard their prayers, which he described as the pillar of a Muslim’s life and a source of strength in facing challenges.
The third was to develop a consistent relationship with the Quran according to one’s ability, while the fourth was to practise the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad SAW in everyday life.
The fifth was istiqamah — remaining consistent in doing good deeds, even if they may seem small.
All these values, he said, should be cultivated gradually until they become an integral part of a Muslim’s life and identity.
Meanwhile, Programme Coordinator Ustaz Muhammad Jais Mariappan Abdullah urged participants not to regard the Maulidur Rasul SAW celebration merely as an annual event, but to draw meaningful lessons from every session and apply them in their lives.
He said attending the programme and listening to the religious sessions alone was insufficient if the knowledge gained was not translated into practice and personal transformation.
“If possible, this year let us take some lessons from what we have heard, reflect upon ourselves and try to practise what the ustaz and ustazah have shared with us.
“Be a model, or a dai, to our friends out there,” said Ustaz Jais Mariappan, who is also PERKIM National Dakwah Executive 1 and Chairman of the PERKIM Friday Prayer Hall.
He also expressed his appreciation to MAIWP for its continued support in making various PERKIM dakwah programmes a success.
According to him, the collaboration between PERKIM National, MAIWP and the PERKIM Friday Prayer Hall in organising the programme demonstrated the importance of institutional synergy in strengthening dakwah efforts and the development of the Muslim community.
He hoped similar programmes would continue in the future with wider public participation so that the benefits of Maulidur Rasul programmes could reach more people.
Meanwhile, PERKIM Vice-President Dr Haji Mohd Ridhuan Tee Abdullah, in officiating the celebration, stressed that Maulidur Rasul SAW should serve as a catalyst for Muslims to make positive changes towards a better way of life.
He said the sirah of Prophet Muhammad SAW should not merely be remembered as history, but must be translated into changes in attitude, character and conduct.
Dr Ridhuan Tee also reminded participants that PERKIM’s responsibility extended beyond organising official programmes, as the organisation carried a significant trust to continue the dakwah mission that had been built over many years.
He said his relationship with PERKIM was deeply personal, having embraced Islam at the PERKIM National Headquarters in 1985, and that he would continue to make every effort to attend the organisation’s programmes and activities.
In the context of Malaysia’s plural society, he also stressed the need to highlight shared values that could unite communities, including efforts to combat social ills such as gambling, adultery, alcohol abuse and drug abuse.
Dr Ridhuan Tee further reminded participants that Maulidur Rasul celebrations should not merely be grand in terms of events and activities, but should bring about genuine transformation in individuals, families and society.
“Do not keep celebrating, celebrating and celebrating, yet remain unchanged. The Maulidur Rasul celebration must lead us towards becoming better people,” he stressed.
He expressed hope that the celebration would serve as a starting point for all participants to renew their commitment to emulate Prophet Muhammad SAW and make his exemplary character the foundation for building a knowledgeable, virtuous, united and prosperous society.
The programme concluded with a communal meal followed by congregational Zohor prayers.
